Birthdays are a big deal for those under-age, not so much for me. Nonetheless, celebrating family milestones is always a good excuse for some great food, wine and deliciously decorated dessert.

For our children, of course the festivities extend to school (not the wine part). Each year, our little beasts opine about what sweet treat to bring to class on their special day. Ruby’s choice was cake pops.

My decade-old daughter has domestic goddess potential (like her mother) and decided she wanted to make her own confections to share with her friends. Theo wanted to help.

So, here’s how we did it.

1. Either bake a sheet cake (any flavour you like) or go the grocery store and get a pound cake or other yummy substitute. Then add some frosting, jam or some other kind of good-tasting binding agent. Get one or two children to mix/mush it up well.

2. Shape into ping-pong-sized balls.

3. Place on a baking sheet lined with parcment or wax paper and pop in the freezer to firm up.

4. Melt chocolate (white, dark, milk-whatever you like) in a double-boiler until smooth.

5. Take the cake pops from the freezer, insert a lollipop sitck and dip in the melted chocolate. Cover in the sprinkly bits of your choice.

6. Let the cake pops cool and the sprinkles set. Best to put in the fridge.

7. Wrap in some clear bags and you are all set.

Live beautifully,

Cynthia
